Dimitris PLEXOUSAKIS

Dimitrios Plexousakis, Deputy Director of the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) is a Professor at the Department of Computer Science, University of Crete and Head of the Information Systems Laboratory of FORTH-ICS. He served as Director of the Institute and Vice President of FORTH from 2017 to 2025.

He received his B.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the University of Crete in 1988 and M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 1990 and 1996 respectively. His research interests span the following areas: Knowledge Representation and Knowledge Base Design; formal knowledge representation models, reasoning systems and applications of artificial intelligence; Neuro-symbolic Artificial Intelligence.

He has published over 350 articles in international conferences and journals. He possesses extensive experience in the scientific coordination of research projects at the national and European levels. He is chairing the National Scientific Council on Computer and Information Sciences. He serves the role of the Scientific Coordinator of the European Digital Innovation Hub “smartHEALTH”, national representative in the AI Board, Committee on Medical Device Regulation and the ESFRI Strategic Group on Digital. He is a Senior member of the ACM, and a member of AAAI and the Hellenic Society for AI.
