Simona Martin is Scientific Officer, Project and Group Leader ‘Rare Diseases’ at the European Commission, Directorate-General Joint Research Centre (JRC), Directorate F - Health, Consumers and Reference Materials.

She is a medical doctor specialised in hematology. With a PhD in the field of stem cell transplantation for haematological malignancies at the University of Heidelberg, she worked in clinical patient care and clinical research (hematopoetic stem cells and minimal residual disease after high-dose therapy) at the Clinics for Hematology-Oncology of the Universities of Heidelberg and Duesseldorf. She joined the JRC's Institute for Transuranium Elements (Karlsruhe, Germany) in a radio-immunotherapy project on targeted anticancer therapies.

Currently she is a member of the ‘Disease Prevention’ Unit at the JRC's site in Ispra, Italy, in charge of the project and group developing the European Platform on Rare Disease Registration (EU RD Platform).
